Geographical Distribution:
Estuaries are all over the world but in certain places and forms. One of the forms is the Coastal Plain Estuary, which occurs when the sea levels rise and fill in an already existing valley. These types of estuaries are of course, located in coastal regions. Another form of estuary is a Tectonic estuary. Tectonic estuaries occur when the earth’s crust is shifted together and rifted apart. These types of estuaries are located in fault lines (line on a rock surface or the ground that traces a geological fault). The next type of estuary is a called Bar-Built estuary. These occur when a sandbar or barrier island “protects” a lagoon or bay from the harsh waves of the ocean. These estuaries are located directly next to an ocean and sit on the coastline. The last type of estuary are the fjord estuaries. This type of estuary occurs when glaciers carve out a deep and steep valley. After this happens, the valley then fills up with water from the ocean.
